Catch-All Email Verification That Flags Them Instead of Faking Them

A catch-all domain accepts mail to every address, real or invented, so no verifier can confirm a single mailbox on it. Mailsfinder returns those as their own segment with the reason attached, rather than calling them valid and letting you find out at bounce time.

Why a catch-all cannot be verified

Verification works by asking the recipient mail server whether a mailbox exists. A catch-all server is configured to say yes to every name, so the answer carries no information about that specific person. Any tool reporting it as valid is reporting the server's politeness, not a fact.

01
spellcheck

The probe

We ask the server about an address that cannot exist at that domain.

02
dns

The tell

If the server accepts that address, it accepts everything, and the domain is catch-all.

03
handshake

The honest answer

Risky in the app, Unknown in the API, with catch_all set to true in both.

04
verified

Your decision

Send in a watched batch, route to another channel, or suppress. The flag makes it a choice.

What to do with the catch-all segment

Three approaches that work, in the order most teams try them.

1

Send it separately

A smaller batch from a secondary domain, watched for bounces before anything bigger goes out.

2

Raise confidence first

Check the address against the company pattern and whether the person still works there. A matching pattern on a live employee is a better bet than a guess.

3

Use another channel

LinkedIn or a phone call for the names worth the effort, so an unconfirmable address does not cost you the account.

Who runs into catch-all domains most

groups

Enterprise prospectors

Large companies on Microsoft 365 are frequently catch-all, so a clean-looking enterprise list is often the least confirmable one you own.

campaign

Agencies

Client lists arrive with the catch-all share already baked in. Reporting it up front stops the bounce conversation later.

rocket_launch

Recruiters

University and hospital domains catch everything. A separate segment keeps a good candidate from being suppressed by mistake.

business_center

RevOps teams

A catch-all flag on the record tells sales to confirm the address another way before a sequence starts.

Frequently asked questions

What is a catch-all email address? expand_more
It is an address at a domain configured to accept mail sent to any name at all, real or invented. Write to a colleague who left two years ago and the server still says yes. Companies set this up so typos do not bounce, and it is common on Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. For verification it is the one case an SMTP check cannot settle, because the server answers yes to everything.
Does Mailsfinder charge for catch-all results? expand_more
Yes, 1 credit on a verification and 20 on a find, the same as any other result. The check ran, the mail server answered, and the catch-all status is the answer. What we do not do is call it valid to make the number look better.
Should I send to catch-all addresses? expand_more
Treat them as a separate segment rather than a yes or no. Many teams send to catch-all addresses in a smaller batch, watch bounces and replies, and keep them out of the main campaign until there is evidence. What you should not do is mix them into a 50,000 address send as if they were verified.
How do I know a domain is catch-all before I buy credits? expand_more
Use the free catch-all checker. It asks the mail server about an address that cannot exist and shows you the raw answer, five checks a day with no signup. If the server accepts that address, every verification result on that domain is unconfirmable, including ours.
Can any tool resolve a catch-all address? expand_more
Not through SMTP, because the server will not tell anyone. Some vendors sell a score built from other signals, and a score is a probability, not a confirmation. Mailsfinder raises confidence using the domain pattern and its own data, and still reports the address as risky rather than claiming certainty it does not have.

Catch-all is a decision. Not a verdict.
